  1. People all over London often describe their area by the name of the nearest station... it's not unique to Dulwich/Peckham/Camberwell. Hence Camberwell residents may often say they live in "Loughborough Junction", "Denmark Hill", or even "East Dulwich". Doesn't necessarily mean they're embarrassed about their post code.
  2. Nothing to do with estate agents... surely they don't market any area to a certain clientele? People go to them because they've already decided they want to move into the area.

Because it's tatty. While it may hold a certain charm for some of us, in reality it will turn off lots of potential customers. I'm surprised that we're even debating this point.
  5. I liked the retro annuals display too. But seriously... how much would it cost to sand down and repaint the woodwork? Why don't the owners understand that it's important to have an appealing shop front?
  6. If you do the buffet, it should be in a separate category. You can't judge the buffet at one place vs "a la carte" at another place.
  7. I don't see any reason to doubt Kyle's authenticity... if it's a hoax, it's quite a boring one. However, he appears to be quite a naive young man. My advice : -don't bother coming with less than ?3000, otherwise you'll run out pretty quickly. -Stay in a hostel until you find some sort of work. -Leave valuables at home with your folks in Ohio. -Start changing your money (or at least some of it) into GBP now, in case the exchange rate dives again while you're still saving. -Come equipped with either a work permit of some sort, or a ticket for a return flight.

It's already very difficult to get on an east bound Jubilee Line at Canada Water during rush hour... and it's only going to get worse.
  9. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I would not eat a rare burger. It's different to a rare steak, where the the "raw" bit is on the inside and will not have come into contact with anything dodgy. Not necessarily so with a burger (especially in some dodgy chain). Anyway, this is gonna get lounged if I carry on - so I won't...

Yes, they've actually converted the tootsies site to a GBK now. kford Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Not being able to offer rare burgers does suggest > that the patties are prepared off-site however. Not sure I'd ever eat a rare burger... I would have thought you're taking a food poisoning risk, no matter where it was prepared!

Why do you think that the new "London Overground" (not strictly the tube) route will provide a better service for the City and Canary Wharf than the existing train services into London Bridge?

  13. That website only seems to have a small proportion of sales on its database.
  14. Maybe that's why it's still on the market.
  15. According to Frank Zappa, "Art is making something out of nothing and selling it".

SeanMacGabhann Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > on so many levels this annoys me - sorry Jeremy. > > Firstly the assumption that housing SHOULD be a > commodity just like anything else rather than one > of life's essentials Don't get me wrong... as I've stated many times, I have no desire to see the price of property rise. Even as a home owner (well sort of), I believe that a "correction" in prices would be beneficial. I agree that housing is a basic need, I've never really viewed it as a financial investment. > Secondly - just because house prices are high it > doesn't mean THE people (not SOME people) are > prepared, or able to pay the price. So many people > own more than one home when others own none, (ie > people with a surfeit of money) pushing prices up > further suggests something is wrong. My point was - how do you value a property? Certain people say property is over-valued, but what does this mean? How did they calculate what the fair value should be? Currently the value is determined purely by supply and demand in the market. Perhaps the supply/demand balance can be addressed by somehow discouraging property investors, but that's really a separate conversation. Anyway, I think you've misinterpreted my post, Mr MacGabhann! I'm not some sort of money-grabbing property investor wannabe, far from it.
  17. Funky Munky in Camberwell is probably the closest place for dancing which is vaguely ok...
  18. Domitianus, if you are genuinely just trying to help people by warning them about the dangers of property ownership, then that's fair enough. It just seems to me that because you post on this subject so frequently (and you don't own property yourself), you appear to be gloating... you just want to be able to say "I told you so", which isn't really constructive. I'm not in denial, far from it. I'm fully aware of what's going on in the housing market. I'm not "geared to the hilt", neither am I "terrified of negative equity"!
  19. Domitianus, you are not providing us with any new facts, we've heard it all before. You just seem to take some sort of perverse pleasure in doom-mongering! Surely the value of housing (or anything else) is determined by how much people will pay for it. So I don't really understand how it can be "over-priced" - are there any other factors apart from supply and demand? Saying that, the market has of course slowed down, and it isn't an ideal time to open a new branch. But Foxtons are not a small company, they will weather the storm better than most.
  20. I've always managed to get off the bus just in time... usually followed by a lengthy vomit session along Walworth Rd. I know what it's like though... sitting there hoping that the nausea will subside, only for it to get worse and worse every time the driver breaks or turns a corner. My advice - don't deny the inevitable, get off the bus and do the decent thing!
  21. James is right... it's a bit grimy, and the food is somewhat "retro". It is also usually empty, so would not go with a small group. However, if you don't mind the above, and you have enough people to provide your own atmosphere, it's worth a go. Food is inexpensive, beers are cheap, and the cocktails certainly look "interesting". Service is friendly enough.

I can kind of understand your point of view, as shops like this obviously are not catering to a substantial portion of the local population. However, there is still Safeways, Sainsburys, Iceland etc where you can get bread and other staples very cheaply. There is still a choice, so I don't really "get" the argument against it.
  23. There is a cheap and cheerful multiplex cinema in Peckham, and the Ritzy in Brixton is very good. And the Picture House in Clapham. Not much live music round here, but there is a night with bands at Dulwich Hamlet football club. And a couple of places in New Cross have regular live music.
  24. Gift shop, I think.
  25. Do we know if G&B have offered to compensate Celestial for loss of earnings?
