I do tend to agree. And being liberal minded is not necessarily incompatible with taking a tough stance on violent crime.

This hasn't cut car production tenfold, because the car will probably only last for a fraction of the time as a privately owned car would. It will probably be replaced by a brand new car within a year if it is being heavily used, and sold onto the second hand market. > Car Club cars are likely to be > better looked after and more efficiently used. Again, I doubt this. Surely drivers would take better care of their own cars? Some people tend to drive hire cars more aggressively (and hence less economically), as they care less about wear-and-tear on the engine, or potentially damaging the car. Plus, you will often find yourself driving further if you're using a car-club car or hire car. Sorry, I'm just not convinced that the environmental argument holds water... apart from the fact that the inconvenience might persuade you to drive less.

Sean, I am not saying I have no choice but to use a car. I am just saying that streetcar works best for those who only want to make occasional journeys. Plus, I am not convinced that using streetcar is more environmentally friendly than using your own car. If you treat your car well, it should last for 10 years easily. A car-club car is not going to be in use for anywhere near that long. Plus, you will probably use more petrol in a car-club car : at least in Huguenot's example of using it to pick up things from the shops, and then drive it back to it's parking space.

Unofficial support your East Dulwich business week
Jeremy replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Jamie, I think that a once a week "late opening night" along LL would be a more practical idea... -
> PS I hope nobody feels that 10 seconds planning > isn't a price worth paying to avoid the ecological > price of building a car? I think streetcar is a great idea, but it's not suitable for everyone. And at the end of the day, the ecological issue is not the only consideration.

Unofficial support your East Dulwich business week
Jeremy replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As I've pointed out before, local shops are all well and good, but it's not always possible to make use of them if you don't work in the area. However, this could work if local businesses agree to stay open until maybe 7 or 8 pm for the week. -
Clarence dumps on Goose Green and leaves it there

Oh yeah you're right... just thought it was a funny site to be honest... -

The kebab incident sounds particularly nasty. Maybe one of these would be of some help in such dire situations! http://www.dog-nappy.co.uk -
Strange things afoot at the Circle K
Jeremy replied to SeanMacGabhann's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
ED is crying out for a couple of decent, proper traditional pubs... and I don't mean filthy stinking holes like The Plough or the old Forresters! -

I'm sorry that people have resorted to name-calling, but by resorting to a tongue-in-cheek remark, with no sign of a genuine apology, you're not doing yourself any favours. Surely you can understand people's frustration at dog poo left in public spaces? -
I thought The Vale had DJs and dancing, after a fashion. Although it's not really my favorite pub to be honest.

And the award for Best Customer Service goes to.. ?

What is "Val's"? -
I heard that in Ireland, since the tax on carrier bags, bin-bag sales have gone through the roof. Therefore it has only served to shift the problem, not solve it. At least, that's what I heard.

Did someone really suggest that ED is becoming overrun with city bankers? It seems highly unlikely if you ask me... -
Anyone know any gossip on new places on Lordship Lane?
Jeremy replied to Katiesa's topic in The Lounge
I'd be surprised if White Stuff opens any time soon... there seems to be a distinct lack of action in there. Although saying that, these shop fitters can move at quite a rate once the wheels are in motion. Iceland is good, you can get some excellent deals on beer and ice cream! -
Egg based outrage at EDD...now quite scared
Jeremy replied to bawdy-nan's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I like the way you're sticking up for your staff, TW. It still sounds as though the guy who threw a wobbly and locked the customers in the shop was somewhat over-reacting though... -
Bob - there's nothing wrong with Steak Diane! Louisa - could you remind us of the owners names please?
-
G&B does look very open and welcoming, and once you're inside it gets better - good wines (and beers) with some very tasty snacks to boot. Louisa does paint a tempting picture of Le Moulin... I am a big fan of rustic, traditional French food. Maybe I can get a free meal if I offer to clean the menu board, and put a brand new print-out of the menu inside!
-
If they paint the outside and stick up a readable menu, I will try it. I expect Rob will too. Proof that they have already lost customers. There's your business advice!
-
Snobby? Islington? Stop being absurd! If you think it looks OK, fair enough, but I expect you're in the minority.
-
Still... no excuse for not taking a bit of care over the appearance of your premises...

Went to Coriander on Saturday, on the back of recommendations from here... seriously people, do you have no taste buds? Lamb Dupiaza - bland, tasteless Chicken Tikka Massala - very sweet, bordering on sickly bhindi bhaji - incredibly salty I know some people are bound to say that we should have gone for the specials, rather than bog-standard curries. But we were trying to keep the cost down... and besides, if they can't even get the basic dishes right, I'm not inclined to try anything more adventurous. On the plus side, the starters were OK, and at least the curries were not overly greasy (like in Surma, for instance). And it was thankfully devoid of damp, cracked plaster and peeling wallpaper (like, oh, perhaps in Surma).
