What is it really like after having a baby
ClareC replied to Fuschia's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Don't read if squeamish, but for me, I had no idea whatsoever how much you bleed afterwards!! Or how long it lasts. It's not horrendous, just was a surprise and unexpected. Stupidly, I didn't really anticipate it either having has a C section - of course when you think of the cause it's going to apply whatever birth you have!! The other surprise is the amount of milk that leaks of a night!! Definitely use a mattress protector!! I used to wake up soaked in the early days!! Only other tip is that Newborns cry..... once you have gone through all the usual checks - hunger, nappy, hot, cold, tired etc don't assume that because they fed recently it's not hunger!! Try again anyway! Also, if they have wind it come's up fairly fast, I remember winding my daughter for ages!! No need to at all, wind come's up within a few minutes of winding, doesnt take hours! Finally, for anyone that has a C Section, avoid letting your bladder fill too much ie pee frequently!! A full bladder will touch the wound from the inside and that hurts!!! Only made that mistake once!! -
Also, make sure you have a change of clothes and something cool to wear, it's really hot in the hospital!
-
Food! You may not get the opportunity to grab anything when at the hospital.

What supernatural/seemingly supernatural things have you witnessed ?

Can we stick with the spooky stories and start another thread debating possible explanations? -
Was at a loss last night as to what to cook (nothing in, needed to be quick as baby hungry etc, threw the following together, really fast and BabyI loved it!! Jar of dolmio(tomato and onion one), tin of tuna and a tin of sweetcorn all heated in a saucepan, once hot, add cooked pasta, mix together, serve and add grated cheese to the top. Very simple, quick, healthy and she loved it! Result!! Tasty good to me too although I was quite hungry ;-)

M20 fastest route, then A279 (think that's the road number, fast dual carriageway direct from M20 to Sittingbourne).

I am older than you Zeban (unfortunately), also did you grow up in London? I was brought up in Kent and we had loads of freedom as did all the other local kids, off on our bikes for the day, visiting friends, going to the woods, park, picnics, building camps, swimming etc (although that was in my Uncle's pool so not "unsupervised" as such, although I used to ride my bike round there as soon as the suun was out ;-)). My mum would have had loads of time to do stuff round the house whilst we were off doing things that didn't include her. The older kids looked out for the younger one's. It was drilled into us not to talk to or accept sweets from strangers and had to be home by a certain time. Neighbours knew each other and it was the way things were.... We did visit museums, zoo's etc but that was more of a family day trip - certainly going to London was a big thing!! Don't get me wrong, education was extremely important to my mum and she certainly did spend time encouraging us in that respect, it was drilled into me that passing the 11plus was the goal and I remember my mum buying me work books which she would do with me. Classes such as ballet etc tended to be limited due to the expense although I did do school clubs and brownies and things like that.

I think life is just different now, the expectations are higher to a certain extent and there is more emphasis on entertaining / stimulating / educating children than there ever used to be. my mum is a great mum who kept the house in order, cooked meals and looked after my sister and I very well. However, we didn't have activities we did each day (different classes / groups etc) like I do with my daughter so my mum would have spent a lot more time in the home. I vaguely remember playgroup a couple of mornings a week and then when older I usually did "something" class wise a week. We were also encouraged that we didn't play in the house (so as not to make a mess!). We played outside a lot with other neighbourhood children and had a great deal of freedom as was seemingly the norm then. I was left in charge of my sister far earlier than would be deemed acceptable today. There was also less expectations in respect of educational play etc - my mum read to us and chatted to us loads teaching us things but it wasn't anywhere as structured as things seem to be now. I think running the house was the prioroty and chldcare was supplementary to that, today childcare is the priority which, given today's life / expectations leaves little time for the house!! We can't all be useless at doing all the things we remembered our mums doing ;-)

Yep me too, sadly they are far too scarce!! Course the "responsible" dog owner types that dont't pick up invariably must all read this forum and upon seeing such threads will naturally see the error of their ways and pick up from then on!! I always pick up too as do all the dog owners I know locally, sadly it's the minority that do not and moaning about it on a local forum will not make a jot of difference!!

Phew...... was concerned everyone else was getting ironing done!! We had a "reliable" (according to her advert) ironer found on this forum up until 3 weeks ago when she went AWOL...... I was concerned she was OK so text a couple of times, needless to say she didn't reply but is OK has been using the forum, I guess she found our ironing too much too ;-) I can admit to having someone new starting tomorrow although may need to hide some of the mountain from her so as not to put her off ;-) If it doesnt work out will definitely be after those numbers!! Thank you :-)

Pretty every item of clothing/ bedding we own is currently filling the ironing basket, filled to 3 times its height and overflowing!!! Resembles an EU food mountain!! I am vegged on the sofa, Cbeebies on, me on here :-(

Happened during an afternoon nap so not sure if he was in a grobag or not...... no one was there in the room so don't know exactly what happened, the theory is that his leg got caught between the bars :-( Worst part was that the hospital managed to x ray his leg just below and just under the break so missed it completely!! He was sent home with the advice to give him ibuprofen and encourage him to walk?!?!?!?! A&E called 10 days later to ask they return when he was x rayed again and put in plaster, apparantly his file was randomly reviewed...... all very odd, good news was that the break healed well and he is fine, he is 3 1/2 now. My sister changed the cot to a bed and put a stairguard on his bedroom door, that worked for quite a long time :-)

Needed to borrow - 1 shaped cake tin for first bday
ClareC replied to byngo's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My friend and I hired one from the cook shop at the bottom of LL last week for our kids joint first birthday party last Sunday, wouldn't recommend it though! The tin had no base. I actually asked the assistant about this at the time and was assured by the assistant there that just placing a baking tray underneath would be sufficient - it was when the mixture was poured in but seeped underneath during cooking losing half the cake! Upon inspecting the tin afterwards it didn't stand completely flat which was probably the issue. I advised the manager of the shop when I returned it, he did waive the ?3.50 hire charge but was very rude and clearly blamed us rather than his shoddy tin - claimed it had been hired out hundreds of times before and nobody had ever had a problem (If hired out that many times may explain why past it's best!). He also asked if we had lined it, claiming his staff would have told us to do so (she didn't even when specifically asked) and claimed our mixture must have been too runny....... needless to say, I dont think he will have replaced the tin!! "Hundreds" of hire clearly not being enough return on a ?25 cake tin!! Couple of my friend's used a rectangular tin and cut the shape out from that - both worked really well :-) I am making my daughter's actual birthday cake today ready for tomorrow, let's hope my shoddy cake making abilities are up to scratch ;-) -
I think once they can climb out it's better to just put them in a bed. My nephew climbed out at 18/19 months, my sister was reluctant to change the cot to a bed given his age but he then managed to break his leg climbing out, he wasn't even 2 :-(

Btw Pickle and Pebbles, both of your houses have looked great when we have visited!! Have now nagged my partner into a big tidy tomorrow instead of the planned beach trip...... Hmmm having read that poem maybe the beach should win after all! I do need to bake my daughters first Birthday Cake tomorrow too..... Almost sounding domestic ;-)

My house is clean but not tidy too!! Used to be very tidy and minimalistic but that was when I worked full time and had no children! Was easy, everything had a place and cleared up as I went along. There were always times when a cupboard or room got in a mess but could spend an evening sorting it when it annoyed me. Since my daughter was born nearly a year ago just keeping on top of the washing and emptying the dishwasher is a challenge. As for time to organise things properly so everything has a home and unwanted things are sent down the charity shop, no chance!! My daughter doesn't tend to sleep during the day, once she is in bed I am tired and just want to veg! Maybe being nearly 6 months pregnant doesn't help or maybe I am just not cut out to be a cake baking, knitting, tidy housed SAHM!

That sounds so familiar!!! Junk moves around our house too, invariably ending in the loft bedroom up intil the inlaws come to stay at which point there is a mass junk move around! My theory is if only I could have a big clear out so everything had a home I would be able to keep the house tidy.... I have a cleaner too, she is fab but I do have to move the junk to make cleaning possibleeach week!

We will be there, my daughter will be 1 next week and I am pregnant with number 2. I'm guessing the group should be pretty easy to find ;-)
