  2. Maybe it's covering up that Journlists are getting too fat on their McDonalds vouchers to go out and report real stories
  3. It's a crucial buffer zone between us and South London proper
  4. Well if Tevez leaves United, they can start singing "Brazil, Brazil"
  5. Special congratulations to Howard Webb, Rob Styles and Steve Bennett for another wonderful season... your medals are in the post
  6. Once we cut through the laughable myth that football was shite for 26 years before United won the Title in '92 and teams were dropped over the Iron Curtain by parachute from a burning Aeroflot plane... surely even the most blinkered United fan Red Devil will recognise that Ajax and Bayern were amongst the European greats? French football of 30 years ago is like comparing today's Scottish football with that of the 60s and 70s, there is simply no comparison what with the economics of today driving a concentration of quality so tight you can now reach a Final without having played anyone of calibre. How can anyone can brush off players like Cruyff and Beckenbauar is beyond the pale. But what I guess it comes down to is that the Club that won most European Cups during the 70s and 80s is Liverpool F.C. Since the inception of European football the great teams are generally considered to have been Real Madrid (56 to 60), Inter Milan and Benfica (60s), Ajax and Bayern (70s), Liverpool (77 to 84) and Milan (89 to 94). Likes of Chelsea, Barcelona and United are up there but they are far from the historical elite.

Utter bollox. It's actually another well known brand that is branching out to Lordship Lane to take over at the existing Somerfield site, namely 'Harrods Food Hall'
  8. >> the European cup was a pile of shit in the 70's and 80's Ajax won it 3 years on the spin in the seventies. Largely made up of Dutch internationals, such as Johann Cruyff, who formed arguably the world's number one National side that decade reaching both World Cup finals (in 74 and 78). Following Ajax, were the legendary Bayern Munich who also won it 3 consecutive years, composed of half the formidable West Germany national side with players like Gert Muller and Franz Beckenbauer. In the 80s there was the great Milan team who won it with legends like Van Basten, Gullit and Maldini. What people tend to forget that in the 70s and 80s there was the Iron Curtain and playing a team from Eastern Europe was effectively playing almost the National side of that country. Just because Manchester United didn't even reach the preliminary round of the Competition during both decades should not undermine what is generally considered the golden period of European football.
  9. >> I'd never realised you had to do so much to earn your stripes and work your way up the ranks. What!? Who!? Why!? As far as I'm concerned all Liverpool fans are equal.. although I do like to have the final word ;-) Football is a sport and without sport the world would be a much poorer place. I personally don't understand the beauty in towelling the ball dry for a long throw in - and the fact Gary Neville used to do it should tell you everything you need to know about that particular technique. Anyone who claims Stoke are upholding the ancient traditions of British Football may as well say that the graffiti artist Banksy is a modern day Grand Master.
  10. Liverpool won the League Cup in '84 which was certainly a lot more prestigious and competitive in those days than the FA Cup has been for the last 10 years.
  11. Don't forget Liverpool in 84, when they did the treble
  12. Remember the Crazy Gang? They were a novelty to start with but eventually half the League copied their tactics to compete and the top flight became more and more about physical power and the long ball over the next 10 years. Dire football compared with the 80s - all of a sudden you had boring, boring Arsenal and the chest stamping Manchester United on top. The England team was a complete failure as the most effective players, as a direct result of the shift in football style brought on by Wimbledon, became the likes of Dennis Wise, Carlton Palmer and Fash the Bash. If Stoke are successful other teams will follow that model - and we'll soon be returning to the dark ages. How do you stop likes of Stoke - e.g. ban the towel & direct throw into box, or does every team follow same tactic.. where winning a throw in near corner flag is more important than pass and move on edge of box?

  14. Well I'm surprised no one has come up with the final answer. I'm going to give a clue.. it was against a German team that they won at the Nou Camp after UEFA ordered a 3rd match due to a fiasco over an illegible player during the 2nd leg..
  15. nope... so far Dundee United Rangers Liverpool Manchester United 1 to go.. and to clarify it was a proper UEFA competition (rather than some pre-season trophy)
  16. Sod Hull and Phil Brown, they grew the grass long so Liverpool couldn't pass the ball.. good riddance! I'd rather we kicked out likes of West Brom, Hull, Wigan, Bolton, Blackburn, 'Boro, Brum and Wolves and simply replaced them with likes of Barca, Real, PSG, Ajax, Sevilla, Bayern, Milan, Dortmund :)-D
  17. >> and if that means an ugly fight where I hold on to him, then so be it. That is the problem Keef, I do not want to spend good money to watch shite football. People want to be entertained, and watching teams deal with Rory Delap and his towel a few hundred times is not entertaining. >> and see how you feel about a little success ;) It's all relative Mockney. I once saw my local team get through all the qualifiers of the FA Cup to play Cardiff in the 1st round proper and it was great, but I'm sure that if Chelsea ever win the CL it'll just as rewarding for their fans.
  18. nope. it's an English club.
  19. It might be the case that United's owners, the Glazer family, are in serious financial meltdown. I am sure United would like to keep Tevez (providing the player is now willing to stay) but with 3 weeks left on his loan deal it suggests they're not going to take up option of paying the previously agreed price. Usually Ferguson is only too keen to let the media know there is not a problem about renewing a player's contract - but on this occasion absolute silence.
  20. What's going on with Carlos Tevez? Now his camp are saying United have made no offer for him (his contract to United runs out in 3 weeks time on the 31st May). Last week Tevez was saying he'd quit because he wasn't a first choice. Maybe both are true. Either way, he wants to stay in England at a club challenging for League and Champions League according to his agent. Obviously Liverpool would therefore be a natural choice if they actually wanted him and agreed a fee. I'd usually say not a chance but the way Rafa chased the hopeless Heinze a few years back suggests that it's a strong possibility.
  21. It's a big club..
