I agree with Atila regarding Thierry Henry, the Frenchman is beyond reproach. Cantona was not fit to lace his boots. Btw, Sandperson, for clarification I believe you are referring to Dwight Yorke not the Duke of York ;-)

Greatest ever strike partnership was, Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish

Violent crime is not something to be ignored, and although it's lower in East Dulwich than some other parts of London it still needs to be prevented with the help of funding, even if ?42,000 really is a drop in the ocean. I really don't know what race has to do with any of this honk - it seems to me that black people and white people both pay their taxes and are both worthy of crime prevention. Surely no one disagrees with that. I don't know what money is being spent in the rest of Southwark but by god I bet it's more than ?42,000. I read that last summer Lambeth was injecting ?5.2m, yes that 5.2 million pounds, over 2 years to combat teenage crime... so that ?42,000 seems more of a token gesture.

60% chance of heavy snow friday in east dulwich
matthew123 replied to Otto's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I am delighted to announce it is not going to snow today in East Dulwich - it was all a ruse by a local supermarket who had excess stock of skiing equipment -
No Sandperson the mistake Beckham made was not joining Barcelona.

So, honk, from the sentiment you have just expressed are you saying that East Dulwich is a powder keg ready to explode - and if so do you think that East Dulwich taxes are getting the bang for the buck (?42,000) necessary to combat crime, in an area incidentally that has more burglaries per capita, than for instance, south Camberwell and north Peckham?

I don't mean this as a slight on Cantona but his years at Old Trafford, 92 to 97, conincided with a big downturn in the quality of English football. There was hardly any competition for United domestically, I know Blackburn and Newcastle challenged briefly but the big boys like Arsenal and Liverpool were in serious decay. Look at the England team of that period who were made up of such players as Geoff Thomas, Carlton Palmer, Nigel Clough, John Fashnau, Des Walker. In any other era most of those star players wouldn't get a game in the top flight never mind play for England - and this was a microcosm of the Premiership competition in which Cantona excelled. What United did domestically still counts in the record books, and I don't want to take that away, but you have to look at what United and in particular Cantona did in Europe during this period. Cantona never made an impression on the international stage either. I doubt Eric Cantona would be the same force today with less liberal referees and where a lack of pace is given no quarter. He was an icon for United but I think it's wrong to class him in the same bracket as Henry and Shearer, who both did it domestically and on the european and international stage.

Surely everyone agrees that Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer are the two greatest strikers since the start of the Premiership - I challenge anyone to say otherwise!? I know everyone has their own favourite players from usually their own team, so I'll keep this neutral and say which of the "great" United players would get into the Arsenal Invincibles? I'd hazard a guess and say that great team would contain more Arsenal than United.

Patrick Viera was a fantastic midfielder and for me had the edge over Keane with his superior touch and speed. I remember one game at Old Trafford when Keane couldn't get anywhere near Viera. Roy Keane was a fantastic box to box all action dynamo and right up there with the greats over last 20 years. The reason I say Gerrard is number 1 is not because he keeps popping up with historically defining goals it's because he unlike any other player can turn a game however good or bad the opposition, I cannot think of a more influential midfielder now or in the past. There is nothing that Steven Gerrard has not got - he has pace, power, hunger, he can pass, shoot, head, he can tackle he can keep going to the final whistle... under pressure he keeps delivering. It's not just about whether you've won the title otherwise we'd be talking about Darren Fletcher.
-
What reasons would they be Keef apart from longevity - I'd say his behaviour on the pitch is top class, how many other players can you think of who will always roll the ball back to the opposition goalkeeper when there is a goal kick? Personally I think Giggs is well respected but has not delivered much of the promise shown as a teenage wing wonder, although still an outstanding player I would say there is only one Thierry Henry. As for greatest midfielders, Giggs is excluded due to being a winger even if in the autumn of his career his now play as a wide midfielder.

EDF Drinks - tonight Friday 6th February - Black Cherry
matthew123 replied to georgia's topic in The Lounge
If they have two people on bar service then maybe one should be dedicated to serving beers - but either way hope to attend as am sure it'll be a good time. I'm sure it's already been mentioned but what time does it kick off? -
Gerrard is the greatest midfielder in the history of the Premiership and would walk into any of the great Liverpool teams from history. Of course he will be missed as a player, he is probably the 2nd best player in the world after Lionel Messi - but Liverpool have also played very well as a team when he has been absent. Who will ever forget that balmy night in Turin when Gerrard was suspended and Liverpool outplayed the Italian Champions Juventus in their own backyard in 2005.

Any description is helpful when it comes to catching and stopping crime (it's like a jigsaw). It's similar to the "fat short" bogus window cleaner thread which alerted people to crime being committed BUT strangly enough did not cause any outrage on behalf of any legitimate window cleaner who fits that appearance (who are now pretty much unemployable in SE22)..

My only criticism would be how on earth teams, sorry franchises, are allowed to decamp to another part of the States ... and leave their fanbase behind, it's crazy! Arizona Cardinals were once the St Louis Cardinals and before that the Chicago Cardinals - it's just not right! But Baseball seems to be the worst offender with the New York Giants now being the San Francisco Giants, and the Brooklyn Dodgers the LA Dodgers! There would be uproar and probably riots if the likes of Manchester United or Liverpool decamped to say Berlin or Munich.

VirginMedia TV/Broadband Down
matthew123 replied to nunheadbelle's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hmmm I was thinking of ditching Sky for Virgin Media.... not anymore! -
I like my football and rugby BUT have enjoyed the American Football this season when Sky Sports has broadcast in Widescreen HD. Hopefully Sky Sports can soon get the NBA back on screen. Maybe there is an argument for us being force fed the NFL back in the eighties on Channel 4 when we had just four TV channels to watch, but these days with hundreds to select I disagree. I reckon the coverage of American Sports in this country is about 2% of cricket.. which is perhaps the 2nd most boring sport on TV behind horse racing! When the American presenters bounce on stage and say 'World Champions' it is a bit OTT but all part of the entertainment - I guess it's a bit like saying Phil Taylor is the World Champion when Darts is only played in the UK and the Netherlands..

Do you want to drive up? The overriding priority is someone who has a good solid car to do the journey... EVERTON v LIVERPOOL
-
EVERTON v LIVERPOOL - I have a spare ticket, but do you have a car? Wondering if any Liverpool fan wants to drive up to Everton on Wednesday for the FA Cup replay, me and a friend have a spare ticket for the game (Liverpool section) for someone who has their own car and willing to drive up and back.

Might have been a failure at Anfield but he was still the Reds 2nd best striker by a country mile - when you consider the alternative of Dirk Kuyt or Ngog it is flabbergasting that they've let him go without a replacement when Liverpool are struggling to score goals to win matches so they can win title. Not sure how many times Keane played an entire match for Liverpool but you could count them on one hand.

The evening trains from London Bridge to East Dulwich are always busy right up until the final train which I think leaves London Bridge shortly before midnight. Most people tend to get off at East Dulwich. I reckon the only thing to worry about is someone whose had a bit too much to drink squirting their ketchup over you rather than their Burger King meal ;-) Not noticed any problem with the football apart from the train is more packed than usual in the hour before kick off. Yes, you may find the 176, 40 and 185 are more relaxing bus journeys.
