paps
Emily's is great!! The owners are so friendly and the fish is fresh! JoeChuff
Emily's is amazing, especially the chips, and the guy is really friendly. We had a nice chat about the AOL Broadband offer and he gave me some tips about how to screw British Telecom (he used to be a phone engineer). He does make you wait for your food but it's worth it because it always tastes fresh, not just shovelling out some chips that have been sitting there for ages. Jessie
The haddock i had at Seacow was amazing, but the chips were dry and stale and very disappointing. Amelie
This may sound like stating the obvious, but the manager/owner of the Sea Cow is a really nice chap why don't you tell him directly what the problems with his food are rather than on a forum that he may not read? SimonM
>>My girlfriend swears by Emily's fish bar's chips,<<Had a bag of chips from there for lunch today and I agree with her! Plus the place is spotlessly clean (despite the unprepossessing exterior) and the proprietor is friendly and cooks to order... Ko
Did the Sea Cow open first in ED or Clapham, or are there other earlier branches elsewhere? Frisco
"Did the Sea Cow open first in ED or Clapham, or are there other earlier branches elsewhere?"Clapham. I was invited to go there, but didn't make it and the next thing it had opened up here. I believe Clapham was the original branch, but there are also appear to have been branches in Stoke Newington and Fulham. The information on this website http://www.london-eating.co.uk/5969.htm was unexpected. And their own website http://www.theseacow.co.uk/ seems to only detail one shop, and that's the one on LL. SeanMacGabhann
I'm 99% certain the LL branch is/was the original and Clapham followed a couple of years later Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/15-fish-and-chip-shop-on-northcross-road/page/2/#findComment-50478 Share on other sites
Mark
Clapham was first, then here, then Stoke Newington. The Clapham one has now closed and been replaced by a different outfit called the Fish Club. Very nice it is too by all accounts. Not sure if the Stoke Newington one's still going. SeanMacGabhann
Are you sure Mark? I remember the Clapham one opening and people comparing it to the ED one[quick rummage]Here's a review I remember readinghttp://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/reviews/8188.html Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/15-fish-and-chip-shop-on-northcross-road/page/2/#findComment-50486 Share on other sites
Rolo Tomasi
Clapham was the first. It opened up when i lived over there. Before that it was munchies cafe. Frisco
I'm 100% sure the Clapham one opened before the ED one, for the reasons given above. Hence I know exactly what Sea Cow was going to be before it opened its doors in LL."The Clapham one has now closed and been replaced by a different outfit called the Fish Club."Thanks for this, I hadn't realised. I guess the general competition in CHS saw them off, and the reviews I read were pretty dire. alachlan
The clapham one was there a long time before ED and was a lot smaller Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/15-fish-and-chip-shop-on-northcross-road/page/2/#findComment-50542 Share on other sites

MrBen
Want my honest opinion based on experience?I have had both good and bad fish and chips from Emilys, Sem's (on Underhill) and Sea Cow. I find it depends on:- When the oil was last changed (old oil = stale fried taste)- If it has been sitting on the shelf or cooked fresh- If the fish itself is fresh or frozen (but then defrosted and freshly cooked)Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the Sea Cow use fresh (wet) fish, whereas the others all probably use frozen fish (prob from the same wholesaler) that is then defrosted? That alone would explain why its more expensive. Sea Cow is not trying to be the cheapest just better.I find can't go wrong with Haddock or Cod at the Sea Cow (with fresh lemon to squeeze) but last time I tried the Snapper there they murdered it. It was solid! It doesn't need much cooking. They also seemed to be struggling to meet demand (was very busy) so were cooking in expectation (and keeping it warm) rather than cooking to order. Fish that has been sitting for 1 hour after frying tastes like sh&t. The Sea Cow chips are also not the best. Kind of stale.Other points:- I agree owner of Emilys is a very nice and decent gentleman indeed. He gave me free chips once. He's a cool guy.- Once had the greasiest fish n chips ever from Sem's (liquid fat oozing out) but other times its ok. Kebab shop is better.- If you are on a budget (<?3) jumbo savloys in batter are f&&&ng magic. (Dont think about what bits make the meat)- Why is it not like Scotland where we get salt n sauce and King Ribs in batter. And Haggis. And deep fried pizza's.If you are used to a scottish chippy they are all rubbish down here! EDOldie
I stray from ED to herne Hill and Olleys for my Fish & Chips + mushy peas to die for. Clapham was the first Sea Cow without a doubt. Not keen on the chips at the Sea Cow in LL although agree the fish is first rate.
