I had a very nice piece of cod on Saturday afternoon. Very nice, indeed. Freshly fried and extremely tasty.

Emily's is amazing, especially the chips, and the guy is really friendly. We had a nice chat about the AOL Broadband offer and he gave me some tips about how to screw British Telecom (he used to be a phone engineer). He does make you wait for your food but it's worth it because it always tastes fresh, not just shovelling out some chips that have been sitting there for ages.

Ha Ha - Brilliant! >:D<

"Did the Sea Cow open first in ED or Clapham, or are there other earlier branches elsewhere?"

Clapham. I was invited to go there, but didn't make it and the next thing it had opened up here. I believe Clapham was the original branch, but there are also appear to have been branches in Stoke Newington and Fulham.

The information on this website http://www.london-eating.co.uk/5969.htm was unexpected. And their own website http://www.theseacow.co.uk/ seems to only detail one shop, and that's the one on LL.

I'm 100% sure the Clapham one opened before the ED one, for the reasons given above. Hence I know exactly what Sea Cow was going to be before it opened its doors in LL.

"The Clapham one has now closed and been replaced by a different outfit called the Fish Club."

Thanks for this, I hadn't realised. I guess the general competition in CHS saw them off, and the reviews I read were pretty dire.

Want my honest opinion based on experience?

I have had both good and bad fish and chips from Emilys, Sem's (on Underhill) and Sea Cow.

I find it depends on:

- When the oil was last changed (old oil = stale fried taste)

- If it has been sitting on the shelf or cooked fresh

- If the fish itself is fresh or frozen (but then defrosted and freshly cooked)

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the Sea Cow use fresh (wet) fish, whereas the others all probably use frozen fish (prob from the same wholesaler) that is then defrosted? That alone would explain why its more expensive. Sea Cow is not trying to be the cheapest just better.

I find can't go wrong with Haddock or Cod at the Sea Cow (with fresh lemon to squeeze) but last time I tried the Snapper there they murdered it. It was solid! It doesn't need much cooking. They also seemed to be struggling to meet demand (was very busy) so were cooking in expectation (and keeping it warm) rather than cooking to order. Fish that has been sitting for 1 hour after frying tastes like sh&t. The Sea Cow chips are also not the best. Kind of stale.

Other points:

- I agree owner of Emilys is a very nice and decent gentleman indeed. He gave me free chips once. He's a cool guy.

- Once had the greasiest fish n chips ever from Sem's (liquid fat oozing out) but other times its ok. Kebab shop is better.

- If you are on a budget (<?3) jumbo savloys in batter are f&&&ng magic. (Dont think about what bits make the meat)

- Why is it not like Scotland where we get salt n sauce and King Ribs in batter. And Haggis. And deep fried pizza's.

If you are used to a scottish chippy they are all rubbish down here!

May I also add "And we have the highest rate of heart disease of any EU country" to that post.

But it tastes f***ing great.

    • As someone who's gradparents on both sides were immigrants, and someone old enough to remember my parents fear and anxiety over Enoch Powell I am deeply distubed by the rise of the far right, anti immigration and general xenophobia I am witnessing in the UK and in the tabloid press. seeing the cross of St George flag makes me shudder...rightly or wrongly I read it as a pro white anti anyone not of pure white christian origins. Within immigrants this country would be sc**wed.  I was born here but sadly I don't feel particularly at home here any longer.
    • Starmer was in the news today saying he flies a St. George's flag in his flat in Downing Street.   Make of that what you will. https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/keir-starmer-is-downing-streets-david-brent/ "Whenever Starmer tries to appear normal, he ends up sounding like a mixture of David Brent and the acid bath murderer. As he was asked about the proliferation of flags across the country, there came some absolutely classic examples of the genre. ‘I’m a supporter of flags’, he began. ‘I always sit in front of the Union Jack’, he insisted. Always? I can just imagine a flunky following the PM around – to his local, on trains, as he goes to the lavatory, just to ensure he is always in the presence of a Union Jack. Determined to make things even weirder, Starmer informed Chorley that he had a St George’s Flag up in his flat, as if he was trying to entice him upstairs in order to kill and eat him."
    • I'm sure Scooby and the gang would be aiming that book at the current left/far left brigade! lol!
