In reply to Jimbo.

We've never had to re-queue just for more drinks.

Just ordered from a waitress, had them brought over with a bill & paid as we leave.

As for the comments on price, quality etc.

Never had bad or duff food.

Even had wine of reasonable quality.

i think you get what you pay for & can usully get out for less than ?15.00/head.

Which for reasonable food & drink in Lordship Lane isn't really that bad, is it?

OMG i think you're being serious.

My flat, ?17.00 each and you get to stroke the cat and have free 2nds and 3rds coffee refills.

nought wrong with a fondue.

charma charma charma charma charma ca meeee leee onnn, you come and goooo, you come and go oho oh.

To me GBK is good but not quite the cigar. Now the best burger that I have had in ED was at Inside 72 which we used to frequent 5 yrs ago BC (Before Children). That was a really good burger - served with a pint of draught beer (good draught beer at that) and no children to be heard or seen. It the ultimate combo. Does anyone know if they still do their burger? and if it's any good? The best thing about GBK is the milkshake. Just don't drink one before you Burger arrives.....

Absolutely Keef.

I have thought for a while that the use of red onion should be strictly licenced - you should only be allowed to serve it if you can prove that you know how much is too much. Under my proposed licencing system, overdressing of your steak sandwich would result in a dawn raid by the red onion police!

As for GBK, only been there once and it was ok. I agree too noisy and I didn't much like the funny self service / waitress mix. One positive though, they serve Macs Gold beer from New Zealand, which is lovely and organic, although only brewed in NZ so terrible food miles. Oh dear, life is complicated isn't it?

>> why must every steak sandwich be filled with so much caramelised red onion that you can taste nothing else!?!?<<

"How did you find your steak sir?"

"I just spooned about 8 ounces of caramelised onions to one side and there it was!" (c. Veryoldjokes Inc.)

But it's true the more onions you add, the less steak you require to "fill" the sandwich...:))

I do, if I'm having it as a meal, rather than a fast food snack. Which is something I don't tend to do, unless I'm on my way to Norfolk and stop off at a roadside place that's famous for its burgers. Also, if you think all burgers are the same, then you have been misled. They vary greatly in quality depending on the meat used to prepare them, and the other contents. I actually don't often eat burgers, but I have an American friend who does and I trust his judgement. He rates GBK quite highly, and does so based on their quality and that of the ingredients (which, being diabetic, he checks), as opposed to that of the fast food alternative you've referred to.

On the issue of eating with 'filth', I guess this is back to the class issue that keeps raising its ugly head. I'm quite happy eating in local caffs when I wish to, and I don't mind who else is in there either, as long as they behave properly, and don't rant loudly, particular if it's in an aggressive or a Daily Mailesque manner.

"Not a snob at all then are we Frisco?"

Snobbish not to want to eat in places where people can't or don't behave properly, or are aggressive?

You may need to look up the meaning of the word 'snob', and stop being silly Sean.

As it happens, I'm either a snob nor an inverted one, and both kinds annoy me with regards to ED.

  • 3 months later...

I can't quite believe how bad this place is.

I just had their chicken burger... a piece of greasy breast fillet from Iceland, devoid of any taste whatsoever, and their usual pointlessly oversized bun. I can't remember when I had anything quite so vile.

Will stick with their milkshakes from now on. This is the second bad meal I've had there; wish I hadn't given them a second chance.

I am currently working in New York for a number of weeks and have tried a number of burger places which typically get 'best in NYC' on the important websites (www.menupages.com etc).

To be honest, GBK is up there with the best of what New York has to offer. I haven't tried DB Bistro Moderne's burger with flecks of foie gras, but GBK does compete with most of the specialist burger joints.

I guess there is only a certain level of taste to which minced beef can aspire!

    • It is most likely gas, with what looks like a stop cock, and although the pipe may well have been isolated later from the supply you should get in a gas safe engineer to remove it. At worst it might need to be capped off beneath the floor boards. Don't interfere with it yourself.
    • Sorry, I know this isn't strictly an East Dulwich topic but as there are so many late-Victorian properties in the area I wondered if anyone has seen anything similar in their house and can advise. We have what looks like an old gas outlet on the back wall of our daughter's bedroom which we'd like to remove, but we weren't sure whether it's safe to do so. Do I just call a registered gas engineer to check it out? And is it definitely a gas outlet or might it be something else? It's at floor level so maybe electricity but it doesn't look like any electricity outlet I've ever seen! Has anyone had any experience of dealing with something similar?
