Not sure if anyone has posted about this before, but on the Scores on the doors site you can search for local restaurants and find out how they did in their last hygiene inspection. There are 5 possible stars, with 5 being the best and 1 (or 0!) being the worst. I've just wasted loads of time searching.... Le Chandelier and Tandoori Nights both only get 1 star......

On a positive note McDonalds gets 5 Stars as does KFC, Pizza Express and all the other chains.

Still you can also rest assured that an excellent 4 out of 5 on Lordship Lane and close by goes to:

Thai Corner Cafe

Sea Cow

Black Cherry

Kebab & Wine

Le Chardon

Springers Wine Bar

Blue Mountain

Anatolia

Domino's Pizza

Bubble & Squeak Cafe

The Lane Cafe

Pavilion Cafe Dulwich Park

Cafe Rouge

Mr Lui

Pizza Pan

Franklins

Curry Cabin

Cafe Nero

Dulwich Picture Gallery

The Plough Cafe

Starbucks

Cafe el Passo

So now we are presented with these figures, what are we supposed to do with them? William Rose scores lower than Iceland, but looking at the scoring system this might simply be because WR deals with riskier food, i.e. fresh meat, versus processed frozen. Bellamy's newsagent gets 5 stars, maybe I should buy my meat there. Note also that many of the reports are over a year old.

Take this whole thing with a pinch of salt (but try to keep the salt to less than 6g per day or the diet police will be on to you.)

Reading through this thread I've tried really hard to find some part of me that might care about food hygiene stars, but I just can't.

Perhaps I'll get a horirble case of food poisoning, perhaps I deserve to, but I can't imagine ever looking up the hygiene rating of a restaurant I like or changing my behaviour because of it.

Just me?

True. All their fresh food and their veg is sealed in plastic. I'm sure that's more hygienic. What happens to it when it's being processed before it gets to Iceland I've no idea. All round which fresh meat do I have more faith in? William Rose.

This is an excellent scheme. It is most important to check the hygiene standards of any restaurant you eat at. By publishing this information, perhaps we can try and cut down on some of the terribly lax standards prevalent in so many eateries.

I have a friend who works in a fairly well-known restaurant in Soho. She tells me that on one occasion, a rat ran across a shelf and fell into a cooking pot! The head chef ordered someone to fish it out with a sieve and then the food in that pot was served to customers anyway! Apparently the chef said the heat would kill the germs!

I think we should care - the sad thing is that so many managers of catering businesses don't care about food hygiene or their customers' health. Remember that some people eating in cafes and restaurants could be very seriously affected by food poisoning - children, the elderly etc. Yes, some of the reports may be quite old and things could have improved, but if the business wasn't that bothered about food hygiene at the last inspection......
The main difference between 4 and 5 star premises is that the 5 star ones have all had an independent hygiene audit of their premises. This does not make them any cleaner than the 4 star premises and as can be seen from the lists above, it is something that is much more cost effective for multinationals than small independents.

and yet when people go travelling in the east, most of the "genuine" food raved about is the authentic stuff served up by locals, on a manky old one ring gaz, with the local vermin watching on... or is that just me?

Sterile environments scare me - it must erode at our ability to fight germs - a bit of rough is fine by me

Students of food hygiene and karma will be interested to know that, since my last post, I have had a high fever, been unable to stand for more than five minutes and nothing solid has gone in or out of me.

I haven't checked the hygiene stars of the takeaway pizza place I used on Wednesday.

Still, silver lining, it's shifted the last stubborn 5lbs that I've been wanting to lose for ages!

    • Hi  I really thought I'd seen a more recent post on the forum about home education meet ups. I can't find it though. Hope some of these might provide leads. https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/137603-home-schooling-advice-anyone-wants-to-do-it-together/#comment-1092093 Very old post but group seems still to exist: https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/92044-home-education-local-group/#comment-954837 You could try contacting this forum member: https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/325368-classroom-support-for-home-education-community/#comment-1621064 Two of these left for right now: https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/events/event/1025-🌟-teens-11-try-painting-sculpture-street-art-at-holiday-workshops/
    • Thanks for your reply. I’ve subscribed to Ancestry a few times in the past but felt I wasn’t using it enough to warrant keeping up the subscription.
    • Hi, I saw your post and just wanted to say that the incident you’re referring to did happen in the late 1980s at Dawson’s Heights. The person involved was named Carl Salawa, and he had just turned 18 years old at the time. Like you, I haven’t been able to find any news articles or official reports about it, If anyone remembers anything more about that time or incident, I’d really appreciate hearing about it. Thanks for sharing what you were told—it means a lot to know others remember.
    • Was anyone else disturbed last night/early hours this morning by the party going on in someone’s garden on Crystal Palace road. Can’t see what house exactly but it’s around number 43 - 41… it was happening quite frequently last year. Seems it’s starting again! Very inconsiderate.
