Actually Waitrose is not that expensive, and the quality of the food and wine is excellent. I have found their staff to be helpful and knowledgeable (unlike those at either Sainsburys or Scummerfield) and the shelves always seemed stocked (also unlike those at S or S).

My only concern is that a Waitrose would be in much greater competition with favourites such as SMBS and other delis in the area than Somerfield and I would not like those local shops suffering.

Its not going to happen anyway ..............

Asda dont do small unit shops like that. I would suspect it isnt large enough for a Waitrose unit, plus no parking. I am not a huge fan of overpriced Waitrose anyway. I hate to return to the speculation of M&S, but it is very much a store that would fit the bill in terms of size and location for a Simply Food outlet. However, I would much prefer the Co-op to have stayed.

Cassius, 'Waitrose is not that expensive'.

Yes it is. I have compared like for like (same brands etc) in Morrisons and Asda versus Waitrose, and the latter is vastly more expensive. The quality might be good, but you certainly pay through the nose for it!

I suppose it depends on the foods you buy - I got a Parmesan from either Morrisons or Asda and it was so mild it wasn't worth bothering with, I'd rather spend a bit more and have something that tastes like its actually come from Italy. As I can't afford to eat out any more I'd rather spend more on what I eat at home.

M&S - now that IS expensive and seems to mainly consist of chicken ready meals and oaked chardonnay - again each to their own.

Wonderful but I can't see Waitrose opening a store around here as they're generally found in better locations and I think ED is still a bit tatty. IMO

There's also one in Richmond which has been there for for years (Waitrose not Richmond) and Richmond seems to have plumetted (sp?) downhill in the tatty stakes lately

Let's not forget that not everyone who lives in East Dulwich is middle class or on a robust income or even a home owner. I for one am very grateful for Somerfield andIceland.

Whether or not I like SMBS and the other specialist stores on LL, and regardless of my wishes to support local business, I cannot afford to shop there on a regular basis.

I imagine there are still a lot of people like me who need supermarkets and half a dozen apples for a quid.Don't get me wrong I do use certain small shops for specific items and when I am can afford gourmet or even organic I'll use them a lot more, but in the meantime Somerfield and Iceland get my custom.

ronniemama, dont start saying you like Iceland on here, you are considered some sort of freak by most of these people. They all seem to think everyone is on a 30k+ wage and able to shop in all the independents because its ethical or some other dodgy reason.

Louisa.

I guess we could pass that logic onto all the deprived folk who shop at Iceland eh Sean? Last thing I heard was Iceland and Morrisons along with Lidl and Netto were the only stores performing well at this time. Says it all. Bring on the 50 piece chicken buffet I say ;-)

Louisa.

The site in Lordship Lane was originally a Co-Op and was there till around the early 80's. It stocked the basics of life - milk, bread, loo rolls etc I cannot even remember if it had a frozen food cabinet. It survived along with Cullens, a high class grocer ( on the corner of Landells Road where the Dry Cleaners is now) and a Green grocers ( where either The Moulin or undertakers is now) Vals grocers was also up and running - us locals got to know which offered the best price for certain goods and shopped accordingly. I remember as a kid and teenager having to go to all of the shops for my Gran, thus saving her a few pence on her weekly shop.

I shop regularly in Somerfield in Camberwell as it is near my work and pick up a few bargains. Since I run the office tea club - I usually pick up half price or 2 for 1 bargins on Tetley or PG Tips. yet when I go to East Dulwich Somerfield they do not have these items on offer. The reduced range at the Camberwell store have a far greater reduction than those in East Dulwich. So I guess that they cater for different income brackets. I rarely go to East Dulwich Somerfields for this reason as I feel they are catering for those who sometimes have more money than sense! I do admit that a friend who is on benefit says that he can get some items cheaper in Somerfield than Sainsburys, he can walk there quickly from his home and the queues are less.

I am a big Iceland fan. Some of their stuff is rubbish, but other stuff isn't, and for those on a real budget (like my family as I was growing up) it's a life saver. Now, I'm as big a fan of Val's as the next person, and they have been there forever and will be fine. I generally think it's a great thing for a supermarket to open up there. I am however surprised to hear it's a Somerfield.
Iceland is good for some stuff, like discounted (and branded) toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoo etc. Their milk, yoghurt, cream and probiotic drinks are really good value, as is toilet roll, frozen prawns, peas etc and tinned beans, chickpeas and the like. There are hardly any queues, you can get freerange eggs for ?1.25 and the check out woman calls you 'babe'.

    • I wonder where he could be deported to, Hungary the obvious candidate in Europe, perhaps he would get on well with Modi?   Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage both said Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood should look at whether Abd El Fattah's citizenship could be revoked to enable his swift removal from the UK. Farage said in a letter to Mahmood: "It should go without saying that anyone who possesses racist and anti-British views such as those of [Mr Abd El Fattah] should not be allowed into the UK." So just racists views are ok Nige?

    • If it's the same one I'm thinking of, it was a little further down the road towards LL, probably where the Fresh Flower Company is today. I'd forgotten all about it, with good reason. I think it disappeared before Blue Mountain opened and became a pizza place? I once bought a carton of milk from the deli and when I opened it, it was solid. I did get my money back though.
    • But when was it posted?! I haven't posted any this year. I can't bring myself to pay the exorbitant cost of the stamps, and at least I can sort of honestly blame it on illness. If I can't hand deliver them, I send e-cards. I know it's not the same, but it's very much easier. And as for the people who still send pages of closely handwritten letters .... very admirable in terms of the hours it must have taken them to write them,  but they remind me of those spoofs eg x has just passed all their many important exams with the highest marks possible, y has just walked round the world in a week, z has just become the first person ever to be knighted twice, we are about to fly off for our fifteenth exotic holiday this year ....... Or else (or sometimes and) they are full of who has had what illnesses and accidents and other catastrophes. Is this just my relatives and distant friends? Am I somehow attracting these reams of handwritten paper?
