I have been reading this site for a number of years and finally have decided to subscribe.

I have lived in the area for in excess of 20 years and have seen, thanks to the middle and upper class that have moved into the area, the area going down hill.

When I moved to the area we lived in a multi racial area where people were willing to talk to each other regardless of class or colour. We could walk down Lordship lane and talk to people and purchase goods of a vast variety of nature.

We could happily shop in Peckham when there was a Sainsbury?s (were where the cinema is now)

The pubs were old fashioned but the clientele were diamond geezers of all classes and colour.

What do we have now:-

People complaining about almost anything form the Butchers (if you talk to them as I did when they open they are very friendly) to predestination of our streets (where do you want the cars to go?) to rats in Sainsbury?s ( I remember when it was still the Sports fields for Kings) and it was called Dog Kennel Hill for a reason, to complaints about violence (if you don?t like it leave), It appears that on the whole this website is for people to vent their frustrations because they have no life, or do not want to get on with other people.

Sorry I know that it is my choice to read website but over the last few weeks you are so up your own that this has got to me.

Get a life and live it, the world will be a better place if people stop moaning.

Good bye.

Before we all jump on GoM's post, and despite the fact that there is much wrong in his nostalgic viewpoint, his basic thrust that in the last few weeks the forum hasn't read all too brilliantly rings true

Of course I would then start a defense which says much of the chatter comes from SOME newer posters and SOME old-timers and one can't just say "you" lot as in everyone

One could also argue that if you find what people are saying to be rubbish, either ignore it, or challenge them as they arise and contribute rather than just coming on and insulting everybody

I found a diamond geezer kind of pub the other day by accident like you do - the Asylum in Asylum Road. Not only is it fantastically both a time warp 1950's in the best sense experience but also is very 'now' in its excellent loos. Darts, proper wallpaper, flowery carpet, brilliant. just imagine saying of your partner 'he's not here, he's in the Asylum'. worth it for that alone.

Are you sitting at one of the tables outside the EDT Will? Casting your gaze across the road at Cafe Nero? Over that patch of tarmac that was recently dug up? I agree though - a lovely bit of road. I cross it often and feel great affection for it.

Sometimes Sean I think your sense of self control is amazing. Hopefully we'll see your Ian Paisley side one day.

I like you Grumpyoldman, you are my kind of diamond geezer, there are some very strange people around lurking on this forum, its all very trivial really. some of the issues are serious some are pathetic, there are a number of odd ball types and some very serious people who have had a personality and or humour bypass. but generally most of them are quite nice and intellectual people that you can have interesting conversations with, there are some who are so filled with rage and scorn they would complain if opportunity knocked.

This "it was better in my day" perspective is generally a load of old cock. Places change and no doubt in 20 years time, todays blow-ins will be bemonaing the changes to ED that they have seen. Have we gentrified a tad? Probably, but the place needed it.

We have shootings, massage parlours, sex shops, road-hogging, nutters and all manner of social ills, so dont go round saying that ED is a nice, safe middle class area.

I shall go back to polishing my barrel, before rolling it out.

pin ED:-

No im not sat outside the edt (although an attractive though + a beer), anyway, i was just making light of the original post. i shall spell it out:

looking up the hill from edt looks like ED is not going down hill.

Looking down the hill from WR is does look like ED is going downhill.

geographically speaking u see. pun intended - but ive ruined it now!! oops

That bloody grumpyoldman is such a johnny-come-lately arriviste! In the real good old days ED not only 'ad an awspital worthy of the name, but there was also a brothel* 'andily placed on ED Grove 'alf way between the Foresters - gradely pub! - and said 'awspital. Now that was town planning...

*ok a basement flat with two working ladies..

    • Sorry but I think it's best if people just check things for themselves when they buy things. In three shops/restaurants (from some years back) I just avoid the places concerned, as in all three  cases I was pretty sure it wasn't a genuine mistake, and in one place  it happened more than once and usually late at night.
    • Sorry Sue - me again. This has been on my mind all day, it's a big bug bear of mine. If you don't mind - please can you private message me some of these shops so I can cross reference / add to my AVOID list.  Thanks in advance. Let's make sure this doesn't happen this Christmas, particularly as we head into sales season. Even more problematic in my experience.
    • Pity you didn't quote what you are referring to, Mal. I didn't see the previous post, and my mind is boggling 😮
