Lordship lane shop gossip (lounged)

Recommended Posts

Yep far less of a loss.

Question: if I bought it, fitted it out nicely, did a partnership deal with the Gowlett, called it Gowlettini, fresh rocket and tomato salads, Peroni beers, stone fired Gowlett style pizzas delivered quickly, small chilli oil for free.

Sit in area....too

Would you buy it?

Now Louisa, I don't want to get into a whole my tastebuds are better than yours thing, but supermarket v. Gowlett pizza (or indeed any decent pizzeria) no comparison. For a similar crispy yet chewy base, I could of course make it myself, and occasionally do. But on other occasions, just don't have time or can't be arsed to let the dough prove.

Surely if you want a pizza you should go to somewhere that sells pizzas, or are you now advocating that no one eats out?

(come over here Sean, the pizza's delicious...)

Suffice to say this is gourmet middle class friendly pizza we are talking about here!

And I think that's 2-1 for my Gowlettini concept so far.

Anyone else? Ice cold peroni's, fresh salads and Gowlett pizza's delivered to your door. Come on...it's a f****ing genius idea.

The sitting-down bit would depend on what it's like (how much ambience is possible there?) but quality pizzas & peroni? For sure.

(and I can't believe* Louisa is pushing a "supermarket pizzas are as good as Gowlett/Any decent pizza place" line.)

* By can't believe I, of course mean, am collecting my ?100 bet from Betfred tomorrow that she would come up with such an obvious line. There are two possibilities.

1) she believe her arguments. ie Supermarket pizza is interchangable with decent dough and toppings. In which case she is a mentalist

2) She doesn't really believe it, but is having what is cutely known as "a laugh". Which still makes her a mentalist. But also a fookwit to boot

Pizza is a bit of bread with some tomato sauce melted cheese and some other fillings on top, in other words cheese on toast with a few other bits on. Anyone who spends 15 to 20 quid on a take out pizza must be a nutter in my opinion, you can buy a frozen pizza or indeed make it yourself at home from scratch for less than a fiver so please dont push the line "pizza like everything else in ED needs to be at least 20 quid before you can satisfy your tastebuds", what a load of b*llocks! It's a PIZZA, in Italy these things are eaten as a snack like we eat sausage rolls (;-))

The Gowlett used to be a bloody decent pub and now they sell pizza? WTF?

Louisa.

I think I can help. I can (not very exclusively because it's been mentioned before on the EDF) reveal a source of fresh, cheap pizza for rather less than '15 to 20 quid' - it hits the 'less than a fiver' mark in fact - ?4 for the basic to a max less than ?6. All ingredients organic, cooked at 500 degrees C in a wood fired oven with a sour dough base raised for 20+ hours. No frills (puddings, starters etc), it's not open in the evening and they certainly don't deliver.

It's as tasty as you can get this side of the Tyrrhenian Sea (and most of the other side). Sadly not in ED, but in Brixton - Franco Manca in the market. But please stay away - especially on Fridays when I usually go - because it's far too busy already.

I want something very like it here now. Please. Maybe in the space vacated by Hisar.... (and evening opening would be much appreciated). Thank you.

Louisa, I'm sure pizzas at the Gowlett cost nowhere near ?15. Not many pizzas would cost that much (maybe the huge ones from Basilico perhaps). A frozen supermarket pizza is unrecognisable from a proper pizza you'd get in Italy, or even a decent pizzeria in London. I can't believe you honestly think it's the same thing.

btw, maybe you could explain what's so wrong with wanting a bit of simple food to eat while you're drinking? It means you don't have to cook before you go out, it's cheaper and less formal than a restaurant, and it means the pub makes enough money to pay the bills. Everyone wins. Do you really enjoy a pub less because a couple of people are eating food?

You can dismiss a pub because they sell pizza Louisa! Given your above statement, you presumably would deride a pub that sold sausage rolls, ham sandiwches, pork scratchings or any other pig derived product.

Clearly your preferred option would be a traditional pub with the ladies confined to a well partitioned snug.

So if they shut down and lose their jobs, who cares!

Sorry, but Grrr!!!!!!!!

Have to say, I do like the idea of a good pizza place though.

Oh, and a recommendation, if yo fancy a really unhealthy, but better than the average take away pizza place pizza, give Mammas Pizza in Forest Hill a go. They are the dog's!

keef - don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about people's jobs. With businesses going bust left right and centre I'm assuming that it's a given that I think it's a shame anyone loses a job

But in terms of what most of the pizza delivery places offer - they are interchangable. And they operate out of 10 square feet. Wheras Hisar is a huge restauarnt that offers something nowhere else in the area does

But I will try Mammas

This. I'm sucker for their excellent meat platters, cold Sam Adams beer and large screens showing the NFL.

Although, Cla*ham has a Bodeans...first Oliver Bonas, then Adventure Bar and now Bodeans.

It's a slippery slope I tells yer.

    • Happy birthday! I've just read a bunch of your reviews and really enjoyed it. You write Interestingly without being too ornate, and you manage to give a really good insight into the "vibe" of a place as well as the food. Totally agree with your review of Rocca - it's simple, great food in a friendly atmosphere at a completely reasonable price, esp considering the location.
    • Hello,  I am a 52-year old mother and an integrative counsellor who lives and works in West Dulwich, SE21. In mid January I am starting a new training in Parent Infant Psychotherapy (helping parents to bond with their babies), and a key component of the course is a 24-month infant observation.  I’m looking for someone who will be giving birth ideally in January or February and who would allow me to observe their baby for one hour a week until the baby’s second birthday. The baby can be awake or asleep, playing, feeding, eating or interacting with carer/s and family members - whatever they normally do at that time.  The purpose of the observation is to enable me to gain a thorough knowledge of very early infant development and to develop the capacity to maintain an observationally minded and non-judgemental attitude in my work as an infant-parent psychotherapist.  I will provide enhanced DBS clearance and I’m happy to answer any questions.  Please forward this email to anyone who might be interested, email me at [email protected] or call me on 07949716043. I would be extremely grateful for any leads. Many thanks,  Millie  Millie Burton, MBACP Integrative Counsellor [email protected] millieburton.com
    • I keep my promises...had the Sweet & Sour Chicken.  It was great - the best sweet and sour dish I've ever had. The chicken itself was good and the sauce seemed home made with real vegetables and pineapple - it is NOT the red sugar sauce goo you get elsewhere.  The Korean fried chicken was very good but the sweet chili sauce was much more chili than sweet - just far too spicy for me. There is a honey something sauce that I will get next time. Egg fried veggie rice was good as a side.  We also ordered the chicken katsu curry which was polished off so quickly I didn't get to taste it. It looked very good tho. SD is not like Magic Wok used to be - cheap and filling but junk food. (Don't get me wrong - I went often to Magic Wok). SD's food is much higher quality, real ingredients, chunky portions, freshly prepared. I'll be back, for sure.
    • I saw these pair of ducks opposite Peckham rye today not quite sure what breed they are as I've never seen ones like them before
