  1. Worry not, aperol spritz is an optional choice for added continental "cafe culture" influence.
  2. Weekend in LA - The Toasters

  4. I wonder if RB has ever seen Team America? "But America.. and the corporations... they're so corporationy.."
  5. Everyone who's been on a holiday abroad seems to come back an expert on the local cuisine and culture. Everything from sushi, to continental cafe culture, to Nordic model economies. And of course kebabs.
  6. In Italy/France/Spain adults drink around kids, and the children learn to be responsible with alcohol. I therefore propose that beer in the playground is compulsory for all Dads. (Mums can choose aperol spritz if modelling themselves after the Italians).
  7. > In the UK they is a current fashion to simply allow children do do exactly as they please I think that's pushing it a bit.. I wouldn't describe a few misguided or struggling parents as a "fashion". But hey.
  8. Was expecting yet another awful article on why another bitter journalist is leaving London... was pleasantly surprised to read a reasonably amusing piss-take!

Comparisons to Spain/Italy/France has become one of the biggest cliches on the whole forum. Everyone eats wonderful freshly prepared food Nobody eats junk People drink responsibly, teenagers don't binge People are respectful and polite It is, of course, all complete bollocks.

Well... the towns and villages surrounding London DO generally already have train stations! Don't really see that bringing them into the TFL/Oyster system is going to make much difference.
  11. Hope you're having a good break, Foxy. Could use some downtime and relaxing beers in the sun myself... I bet the Turks are loving watching the Greek economy crumble while theirs is lifting off!
  12. If the main consideration is the garden, go for The Rye or The Herne. If you want decent food, the Begging Bowl has tables out the front.
  13. Your post does make you sound rather grouchy, ZT...

But Reading was always a rock festival... somewhere between Glastonbury and Donnington, really. Very different vibe to Glastonbury (I imagine... never actually been to either).

  16. In heavy traffic you really have to stop before the box junction and wait until the path is clear. It's pretty annoying as it's highly likely that someone will either jump in front of you or beep at you - especially in Peckham! But it's really your only option if you don't want to get caught out. I've been caught in the same place.. nothing you can do but take in on the chin and learn your lesson.
  17. Not quite sure what Bob said to Louisa which could be construed as sexist?
  18. smokers vs kids - not always easy because you don't necessarily know if you're amongst smokers when you sit at a table. But if we were sitting down first, and then a smoker came along and lit up right next to us, I'd ask them to stop or move. Or more likely, just sit indoors in the first place - seems a shame on a nice day, but for the other 9 months of the year, it works in our favour so can't complain too much.

  20. Roger Daltrey has sounded very rough for quite some time now. I doubt it's possible to sing the way he does and not suffer some serious deterioration over the years. A great band with an incredible back catalogue, but... maybe time to call it a day. Similar thing for Motorhead (except their back catalogue is mainly total garbage), Lemmy looks frail and was groaning rather than growling into the mic, it's not even funny anymore. Was totally underwhelmed by Kanye West.. essentially karaoke with an oversized lighting rig. Admittedly the fact that I'm not a hip-hop fan means I'm automatically biased - but nevertheless I've previously been impressed with guys like Snoop Dogg or De La Soul who have toured with really good bands behind them. More generally, I struggle to understand the place of electronic music in this sort of environment. Surely it's predominantly pre-programmed/recorded, and you probably would't hear much difference if the musicians walked off stage in the middle of the song.
  21. I would have thought that the current situation in Greece should be enough to warn against kneejerk hard-ish left stick-it-to-the-man politics.
  22. Victoria Inn, Actress, and probably a few others have separate family areas. Kids aren't allowed in the adults-only area at any time of day. Seems like a good compromise.

  24. Paul Weller and his band sounded pretty impressive... put a lot of other big names to shame.
  25. Most pubs during the day are family friendly, which I think is a good thing. Although agree that it might be nice to have one or two which are kid free... it would be a bold step for a business to make.
