Today, I'm bigging up Florence and the Machine 'cos she's a local girl (Camberwell) and I think she might make good. She's playing the Bloomsbury Ballroom in May and you can buy your tickets now from Stargreen.

Today I'm plugging the Royal Festival Hall's Ether Festival 2009. This is one of those little jewels that can pass you by if you're not on the ball. Here's the link:

http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/festivals-series/ether

"Ether is a festival of art and technology that places a strong emphasis on cutting-edge collaborations and visual culture. Past festivals have featured Kraftwerk, Jonny Greenwood, Jim O'Rourke, Dizzee Rascal, Matmos, Squarepusher, Goldfrapp, Terry Riley, Pere Ubu & the Brothers Quay, Morton Subotnick, Harmonia, Radiosoulwax and the Warp Works series , in which the London Sinfonietta collaborated with artists from Shefflied's legendary Warp Records to explore the connections between contemporary classical music and modern electronica."

The lovely Florence has now sold out completely at Stargreen, which I guess is good news for Florence. She won an award last night so trade has been brisk. Still tickets at Seetickets and Ticketmaster though:

The fabulous Polly Harvey is playing Shepherds Bush Empire in April. Go.

I really recommend LEVEL ONE, not standing downstairs unless you're very tall, and I'm not. You get a better view.

Go Polly...

Florence is a very busy girl. She's supporting Antony and the Johnsons at the Teenage Cancer gig. I cannot big Antony up enough - he is divine. I would post a YouTube link but I'm at work and it's a banned site. Anyway, the last time Antony played a Teenage Cancer gig HE was the support act (Goldfrap). Tickets on sale on Friday.

If you like Rock, I bet you wish that had attended this Gig that I have just seen on You Tube:

"Rory Gallagher - Bullfrog Blues"......5 minutes of a Masterclass in how to please and engage your audience from one of the Guitar Greats!

Rory Gallagher-Man Of The People. R.I.P.

I went to see Keane at the O2 last night. I am sure it's not meant to be "cool" to like them, but I really enjoyed it anyway :-).

Realized it was the first time in about 18 years I've been to an arena gig rather than a smaller venue, atmosphere was better than I expected, though I wouldn't much have fancied being in a seated part of the arena, couldn't believe how many people stayed sitting down for most of the gig!

    • This week's edition of The Briefing Room I found really useful and impressively informative on the training aspect.  David Aaronovitch has come a long way since his University Challenge day. 😉  It's available to hear online or download as mp3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002n7wv In a few days time resident doctors -who used to be known as junior doctors - were meant to be going on strike. This would be the 14th strike by the doctors’ union since March 2023. The ostensible reason was pay but now the dispute may be over without more increases to salary levels. The Government has instead made an offer to do something about the other big issue for early career doctors - working conditions and specialist training places. David Aaronovitch and guests discuss what's going on and ask what the problem is with the way we in Britain train our doctors? Guests: Hugh Pym, BBC Health Editor Sir Andrew Goddard, Consultant Gastroenterologist Professor Martin McKee, Professor of European Public Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Mark Dayan, Policy Analyst, Nuffield Trust. Presenter: David Aaronovitch Producers: Caroline Bayley, Kirsteen Knight, Cordelia Hemming Production Co-ordinator: Maria Ogundele Sound Engineers: Michael Regaard, Gareth Jones Editor: Richard Vadon
