After having a couple of pints of real ale that has brought a smile to my face. Seriously though it seems you're not that clued up as to this area. Some estate agent schpeel for you http://www.thatchandco.com/locations/West_Dulwich.htm You perhaps ought to find out a bit more of the area if your geography is so poor.

Children and geography!


We used to get out our old bikes and explore. When we got home we drew maps from memory of where we had been.


I well remember regular visits to the West Dulwich Police Station wooden notice-board to check the Colorado beetle poster. Never did find one that we could report to the police.


The Belair council-run cafe/canteen was more useful to park-goers than the exclusive eatery that's there now.

i'd have to go for sydenham although i understand the big houses in the conservation area go for anything up to ?800k (stupid money i know, but the houses are huge)...


high street does have potential and the transport links are first rate... i dont know an awful lot about schools but i dont think that they are that great? (i'm taking about the state schools here)..

I think they're a mixed bag. A good friend of mine worked in a local school a couple of years ao and told me it was absolutely awful and advised Mrs Keef (a teacher) to avoid it. Mrs Keef did some work in another school last year though, and said it was great.


Biggest shame is that they're probably going to close Brent Knoll which is a special school that Mrs Keef worked in for most of last year. They are fantastic, and offer great support from kids from primary through secondary, with autism and other needs. But Lewisham in their knowledge have decided that these kids will be better off in mainstream classes of 30, with a couple of mornings a week one to one.... Go Bless the money men

Nunhead Lass--Please don't take offense at what I'm saying about schools. I am not slating the children who go there. I am simply saying compared to other schools in the wider area, Nunhead schools are not as good. I'm sure we can all agree that it helps to have decent facilities, staff that aren't under-supported and over-worked (and probably underpaid), and parents who are willing to get involved in the schools. Unfortunately, all these things combined need to reach a "tipping point" before things turn around for a school. But of course, it takes a long time to reach that tipping point, and usually an under performing school becomes stuck in a viscious circle.

A small quibble here, Bolands shut at least two years ago. It's now a restaurant but the names of it slips my mind. Dave, who ran the bar there now runs The Drum on North Cross Road.

Agreed, I grew up there and for the strip north of jamaica Road there simply is no comparison. As a little kid walking round that wasy I used to dream of living in one of those Warehouses overlooking the Thames.


Bermondsey is not ED - that's like comparing apples and pears. But they are both good in their own way.

Hey Downsouth I know the guys who made a stack buying up those old warehouses when they were going for a song, simply to get the storage, then sold out later. Nice guys, and own the kind of jets you dont have to bend down to get into.All of the millionaires I know from bookselling made their stack on property speculation necessitated by needing lots of cheap storage. Look and learn, as the fans used to sing...

      Morally they should, but we don't actually vote for parties in our electoral system. We vote for a parliamentary (or council) representative. That candidates group together under party unbrellas is irrelevant. We have a 'representative' democracy, not a party political one (if that makes sense). That's where I am on things at the moment. Reform are knocking on the door of the BNP, and using wedge issues to bait emotional rage. The Greens are knocking on the door of the hard left, sweeping up the Corbynista idealists. But it's worth saying that both are only ascending because of the failures of the two main parties and the successive governments they have led. Large parts of the country have been left in economic decline for decades, while city fat cats became uber wealthy. Young people have been screwed over by student loans. Housing is 40 years of commoditisation, removing affordabilty beyond the reach of too many. Decently paid, secure jobs, seem to be a thing of the past. Which of the main parties can people turn to, to fix any of these things, when the main parties are the reason for the mess that has been allowed to evolve? Reform certainly aren't the answer to those things. The Greens may aspire to do something meaningful about some of them, but where will they find the money to pay for it? None of it's easy.

      That messes up Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland - democracy being based on citizenship not literacy. There's intentionally no one language that campaign materials have to be in.

      TBH if people don't see what is sectarian in the materials linked to above when they read about them, then I don't think me going on about it will help. They speak for themselves.  I don't know how the Greens can justify promising to be a strong voice for one particular religion.
