Camberwell Grove - road closure / opening (Lounged)

Chav indeed we always disagree. You speak of fighting for the estate. I'm all for providing secure and decent housing for those who need a leg up until they get back on their feet. I do not think they should be places that inspire children to stay for generations though. Safe, secure, services to help get people back on their feet...all fine. But not places that inspire children to move upstairs for yet another generation. -

I'm simply stating what many won't. We would like to see the closure continue and yes, a big part of it is we've come to appreciate the value of creating a ghetto of our own. -

If only the closure kept the riff raff out. At least we don't have the 'boom boom' cars and yes, we'd like to keep it that way. -
Indeed. It's all a bit arrogant isn't it? Setting one's self up as the judge and jury.

Because dear rose, traffic can only go one way due to the bridge issues. So a light signals green for one direction to go, then the other. Imagine roadworks when one lane is closed. -
Just out of curiousity and to understand the robustness of your study, how many wealthy men have you had sex with Chav? I somehow don't see a trail of City power types, but I could be wrong of course.

It's sort of like the job contract isn't RuthE? We want the three months notice when we're made redundant so we can get the cash. But when we find something better, we're always keen to reduce it. Renters want protections, until they want to move.

Keep it closed! One step closer to seperation from Camberwell for us Grove residents. -

How confusing. One debater offers scientific proof, the other offers nothing but general, sweeping insults of academia in general. Did I miss something? -

I just get personally peeved at the dependency culture we've created in Peckham. Anything they ask for they get - to the tune of millions and millions, likely billions. Yet the library is a mad house, the pool/leisure centre an unpleasant place, Bellendon struggling without subsidy...despite the mega investment, the people living there don't seem to take care of the place. So now they want a new train station makeover. No questions asked, give it to them! Yet the poor cousin Camberwell has gotten zero. It's a long time bug bear. I'm hardly surprised. -

Yes a good day I agree. Now, sale and such will take a good three months. New plans etc. and planning approval - 1 year to 18 months. Expect a fight if the plans aren't up to scratch and a lot of to-ing and fro-ing. Once plans approved, it takes three months (at least) before work commences. Then the build/renovation. Best case scenario before any work begins on the site: 2 years. Probably more like 3. But at least it is moving. -
Ah those lovely blue plaques are vying for our vote again. East Dulwich and Camberwell and Peckham all fare well - even one that incorporates the disputed DMZ zone between the two. Here are a couple on offer of local note (hoping to avoid the dreaded Lounge (link to all and vote at bottom). Vote early and often! Anne Shelton, 1928 to 1994 The wartime 'forces favourite' Born as Patricia Sibley at 39 Coleman Road, Camberwell. In 1940 she moved to 142 Court Lane, Dulwich, where she lived for 50 years. She became a popular singer from 1940 and during the second world war, she broadcast to the RAF during the long siege in Malta. She sang with Glenn Miller and Bing Crosby and in her later years she worked for the Not Forgotten association. She was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1990. Ida Lupino 1918 to 1995 Hollywood star in the 1940s and 1950s Born at 33 Ardbeg Road, North Dulwich. Ida made her debut film appearance in 1931, in The Love Race but it was after her appearance in The Light That Failed in 1939, she was taken seriously as a dramatic actress. She worked for Warner Brothers form 1940 to 1947. Ida Lupina became one of the first female directors in Hollywood but was also known as a as a writer and television director. Samuel Jones and Co Ltd Peckham Celebrated maker of stationery and other products The firm of Samuel Jones was established around the junction between Southampton Way and Peckham Grove for more than a century. The largest of the company's buildings was decorated with a picture of the Camberwell beauty butterfly, which became the trading logo. The firm made gummed papers, adhesives and tapes and an engineering factory, which among other products made fire extinguishers. You can see all entries and vote here.

How many millions have we poured into Peckham in the last few years? And now the anti-Tram Peckham Vision (i.e. Eileen) wants a complete overhaul of it's train station and plaza so it can go the way of the library and pool? Build it so they will tear it down? My favourite campaign was about litter at the station. Again PV (Eileen) blamed the Council. No one ever thought to blame those who tossed litter. -

I'm simply applauding the Maudsley, which has been working on this for quite some time. Surely anyone agrees such a sell by a Trust takes time. As for my assertions re: community groups, I stand by them. If you think they are poor assertions, then you'll agree Alan's leap that a handfull of folks sending random emails over the last months - then after a lull they see the place up for sale on a website (noted by someone else on another website apparently) - somehow means they won a long fought battle through massive lobbying. Perhaps we are both making shots in the dark. -

No but I know someone who is. This has been on the cards for some time. A trust owning old properties takes a hell of a lot of time to sort out and get to market. As for pressure groups, that's not brain science. There are no effectual pressure groups in Camberwell, save the Society and the ad hoc Baths Group. The SE5 Forum has accomplished zilch and is on life support. They certainly didn't do anything re: this project. Alan may have posted something there and a few folks emailed, but I know the Trust was grateful for the support of something long in the pipeline. -

I think 'these people' have had the full force of community spirit behind them. The SLP hasn't covered much else. With such sun shining on the decision, I have to believe it is justifiable. The truth, as I understand it, is mentally ill individuals will have 24/7 access to emergency care. It may not be the same as before, but I don't think it means we'll see distressed individuals having to wait in long queues in a Victorian styled hospital with damp walls and flickering lights. I think the decision is defencable and sound. -

Yes a well oiled community group in Camberwell indeed Alan. Now that would be progress. Ha! Still, I'm glad the Trust has had great success with seeing their long-term plans to sell off the site come to fruition. Well done Maudsley. -

No Alan. You seem to love causing online mischief but aren't so good at taking your own medicine. You are gloating about your efforts to 'lobby' on something when all you really did was send a few emails and post on a few sites. Something you excel at. Now you are taking credit having gleaned it's up for auction thanks to someone who does know what is going on. Hardly a victory for some well oiled community lobby. It is actually a victory for the trust who has been working on this for ages. -
That's true, if you are moving from Peckham to Chelsea.

For the trust to put those properties up for auction took quite a lot of effort. I couldn't sell my home in six months - surely you can appreciate this was something on the table for years. I do appreciate you think sending a few emails is 'lobbying', but it is naive. Lobbying takes years, and many have 'lobbied' on this before. But it makes sense, and the trust knows that, and they've been working on trying to do it for a very long time. To applaud yourself and any lose confederation of people who sent the odd email is a bit over the top.
