Photographs prohibited in the library?
Renata Hamvas replied to ce's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The reason for the the sign at Nunhead Cemetery is so that film-makers/professional photographers apply for permission. There are for example staff implications and health and safety issues when a film crew set up shop in the Cemetery. As KidKruger has found from experience, there is no issue with local residents/ amateur photographers taking pictures in Nunhead or the other cemeteries. Renata -
What is replacing the Old Garden Centre??

Constant rubbish at Holmes Place, Oakhurst Grove
Renata Hamvas replied to Peckham Park's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi all, I know this is an ongoing problem for you. This site is under a property management company, First Port Property Services. It's not council property so the council won't remove it unless the residents organise this. It appears that in general the fly tipping happens when residents move out from a property and can't be bothered to organise disposal of their unwanted items. The cost of fly tip removal is passed onto the remaining residents in their maintenance bills. I have asked them to consider CCTV a few times. They are however reluctant to do this as the cost would be passed onto residents as would the cost of viewing the CCTV. (However, this could deter residents from dumping). I hope that this latest fly-tip gets removed over the next couple of days. Please let me know if it doesn't. If anyone spots a new fly tip at this location, The property company's number is +443333214080 and it's option 5. Thanks Renata -
You could apply for Cleaner, Greener, Safer funds for this. Applications are being taken now! http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200256/cleaner_greener_safer The closing date is 31st of October. I could put in an application, but I think this is far better coming from residents than Councillors. Renata

Hi everyone, this has been reported. Council Officers have this in hand. Renata

Fireworks displays this year
Renata Hamvas replied to Marmite-love's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Marmite, I've posted on your thread in the Family Room. The Lord Mayor's show is a week later and that includes fireworks at 5.30pm. Renata -
It depends on where you are going. For Brittany and Normandy the western ferry routes and overnight crossings can be good as you arrive early morning. if you are going to Calais and on from there the ferries tend to be cheaper but the Eurotunnel is faster and if you are up to 2 hours early or late if there is space you can change crossing. Recently moved to nunhead... school recommendations
Renata Hamvas replied to Rking89's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi rking, it depends where in Nunhead you are. In the North, John Donne would be the primary to look at. In the centre, near Evelina Rd, Rye Oak, Hollydale and possibly Edmund Waller depending on how far east you are and Ivydale, Turnham and possible Haberdasher's Aske Free School in south Nunhead. If you are on the edge of previous last place distances for the school you like, you may be best checking if a place is available for your daughter so that your son would have a sibling place. Good luck and welcome to Southwark. Renata -

Secondary school recommendations Peckham Rye
Renata Hamvas replied to emc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Nunheadmum, if you are talking about Haberdasher's Askes, they have got rid of the banding for this year and also there is no sibling link for 6th formers. It will be straight as the crow flies distance to the site closest to you. As there are 8 forms in each of years 12 and 13 removal of the sibling link for these years will have some impact. In the Nunhead area, in previous years some girls have got into Aske's, others have gone to Deptford Green, some to Harris Girls, some to Sydenham Girls the odd one to Prendergast; so a mix! I would expect from Nunhead that you would be highly likely to get a place in Harris Girl's. From previous last place distances you would get into Deptford Green and might get into Haberdashers (dependant on your location). In terms of Charter East Dulwich it's hard to judge what will happen as it's its first year on the CAF form and also I don't know where in Nunhead you are. Renata -
Secondary school recommendations Peckham Rye
Renata Hamvas replied to emc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I agree totally with what Carbonara says. I would like to add, it is OK to put a long shot 1st/2nd on your list and it won't reduce your chance to get the highly likely schools you put lower down. It's not a good idea however to put down 6 schools that are all long shots! Look at the last place distances from schools to see where you would have gained a place in 2016 to give you a rough idea of where your child may be offered a place. Remember that these figures are from offer day and do not include waiting list movement. Renata -
Poisoned Dog from Peckham Rye Park
Renata Hamvas replied to B777's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi B777, I'm really, really sorry to hear about the death of your friend's dog. If/when your friend is able to )and if they have additional information from the vet please could they pm me (or you on their behalf). If it was rat poison than the police and park staff need to know and if it was some natural poison eg from a fungus than the parks staff need to know (to have it removed from the fallen tree or cordon it off to prevent this happening again to another dog). I am glad to hear, Taper that your dog has recovered from what may have been a similar incident. Renata -
I thought I would start a thread on this. Please check when the open days are happening for your local schools. Haberdasher's Aske have their open day today and St Thomas the Apostle tomorrow morning. http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200290/secondary_school_admissions/2351/secondary_schools_open_days_and_evenings https://lewisham.gov.uk/myservices/education/schools/school-admission/applying-to-start-secondary-school/Documents/ApplyingToStartSecondarySchool2016-17.pdf https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/Secondary-schools-brochure-2017-updated-web.pdf It is work going to look if your children are in year 5 and taking your children along to a shortlist in year 6. Please ensure you apply on-time and I strongly advise to use all your 6 choices and put them in your true order of preference. It is OK to have a couple of long shots that you have quite a slim chance to get into (eg if you are on the edge of previous years last distance offered) but please do have some that you have a realistic/good chance to get into in your 6! Look at their admissions criteria and be aware that there may be supplementary forms to be submitted earlier than the submission closing date ( particularly for entry under a school's specialism such as music or sport). Schools do not know which order you place them in. You will be offered the highest ranking school on your list that you have met the admissions criteria for. You will be automatically be placed on the waiting list for any higher ranking schools for which you couldn't be offered a place for on offer day. If you are not successful in securing a place at a school of your choice, Southwark (or the LA of your residence) will allocate you a place. This is why it is important that you use all your choices and do so wisely. A 4,5 or 6th choice school of your choice is usually more desirable than one allocated to you by the local authority. It's worth looking at schools outside the ED area. In recent years parents have secured places at St Thomas the Apostle (boys) in Nunhead on distance rather than faith and places at Deptford Green (mixed)in New Cross have been allocated to ED parents on distance. The 120 places at Charter ED will be offered via the CAF system this year. This is likely to mean that generally initial offers may stretch a bit further out from schools than least year, but that there is likely to be less movement on waiting lists as there will not be parents holding 2 offers for local state schools. Good luck everybody! Renata

St. Francesca Cabrini Primary School
Renata Hamvas replied to claudia_sofia's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Claudia, it sounds like Anna's childminder may work for you. If not, here is a link to Palm Tree's website. http://www.palmtreeacademy.co.uk/index.html To emphasis I have no links to do with Palm Tree's, I'm just aware that they are a local provider of after school and holiday child care. Secondary school recommendations Peckham Rye
Renata Hamvas replied to emc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Haberdashers, Harris Girls, Sydenham Girls, Kingsdale, Deptford Green, New Charter are non-faith possibilities from here (it's hard to judge distance for new Charter this year due to first year on CAF or for Haberdashers as they have changed their admissions criteria, no 6th form sibling link and no banding). I think from your previous postings your daughter may be in a faith primary, so Coloma, St Michael's, St Ursula's, Bonus Pastor and La Retraite may also be possibilities for you. Renata -
I'd second St Mary's. I think it's hours are 9.15 to 12.15 Monday to Friday but you don't have to do all days. Address: 63 St Mary's Rd, London SE15 2EA Phone: 020 7277 6255 Renata

Another starting school question
Renata Hamvas replied to Ris2011's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Ris2011, most schools ask for black shoes and no trainers or sandals. For a child of your son's age I would suggest you chose shoes that have velcro fastening rather than laces or buckles. For running around the playground playing football etc I would suggest you go for black shoes that have a bit of a trainer style to them ie flexible soles, rounded toes etc rather than a formal black shoe style. If you have a limited budget, there is a Clarks Factory shop on Rye lane, near the Rye Chapel. The shoes there are about 1/3 less than elsewhere but they have limited styles. Renata -
Hi Mellors, I'm sorry to hear about scruff. It's worth trying this rescue, they deal with both bunnies and pigs: http://www.freewebs.com/bunnyrescue/index.htm I think they are the closest rescue, there are however others in SE London, including this one in Croydon http://www.bobtailsrescue.org.uk/adopt_guineapig.asp . Good luck in finding a new companion (or 2) for squeak. Renata

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
Renata Hamvas replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Chet, I'm a Peckham Rye Ward Councillor, the equipment falls into my patch, unfortunately my Southwark email is not working at the moment. Thanks for raising the issue with the bars I will pass your comments onto a senior council officer and hopefull we can get this sorted out. In terms of additional/new equipment for the fitness area, I would suggest that when we have the next round of Cleaner, Greener, Safer funding that the group puts in an application. Kind regards Renata -
Hi, ABC, Dulwich Wood used to be a single form entry school with poor performance. It had a change of Head, huge investment by Southwark and has expanded to two forms of entry. It's results are now close to national average with it's value added score (how pupils progress) being better than average. I think it's probably still under-subscribed due to it's recent doubling in intake size and because previously, local parents used to sent their children to other primaries, their younger siblings are going to these schools (as it's easier for parents not to do school run to two primaries). The school is now doing well, so I don't expect it's recent under-subscription to last! I suggest you visit the school when they have an open day to see for yourself. Renata

St. Francesca Cabrini Primary School
Renata Hamvas replied to claudia_sofia's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Claudia, St Francesca Cabrini Primary, as Anna states above, definitely does have an after-school club and a breakfast club. If it is full (contact the school to find out availability) or the hours are too short for you, Palm Tree after school club (details below) does drop off/pick up from the school. Something that may work for you is to find another parent at the school who works part time and do regular childcare swaps for 1-2 of the days and child minder for the rest. Palm Tree Academy 07949 567005 The Salvation Army Citadel 217A Gordon Road Nunhead SE15 3RT E-Mail [email protected] Good luck, I hope you get this sorted out. (ps my Southwark email is out of action at the moment, so anyone with enquiries needs to pm me via here) Renata
