  2. Planning permission has been submitted for 6 x three storey, four bedroom houses. They look OK - pitched roofs and bay windows to (sort of) blend in with existing buildings. All rather uninspired, but could be worse, and a much better option than a big block of flats.

I saw them last year at the Brixton Windmill playing a set of Ramones covers!
  4. Some estates are problematic, others are fine. So a perfectly reasonable question.

Croaky-voiced 80s pop star Paul Young was doing a book signing in the foyer of our office building today. Nobody was interested, and the poor guy looked bored and rather embarrassed. The last guy to do a book signing in our building was Italian TV chef Gino D'Acampo. Back in the 90s, Gino D'Acampo served two years in prison after burgling Paul Young's house.

Die Another Day is without doubt the worst Bond film of them all. Poor old Brosnan never stood a chance after that film. Let's hope that the new one is a decent attempt!

I didn't cut anything out, I just highlighted your lightning analogy to demonstrate that a "better safe than sorry" approach is often best, in various circumstances. Of course you're right, paranoia is helpful to nobody.
  11. "What is wrong with a lovely, fluffy, buttery, crispy baked potato? Last year Rosemary and I got into a Saturday-night habit of watching Spiral/Borgen/anything with Lundt in it, while having baked potatoes and cabbage for our dinner. Sometimes we went wild and added salad or baked beans. It was paradise." If that's heaven, then I'm thinking that it might be worth checking out hell first.

No we don't - but we might take precautions. As a kid my dad told me to unplug the TV aerial when there was lightning. A bit OTT maybe, but better than frying your TV (and everything connected to it). Never, ever getting in a car with a stranger is infinitely preferable to being unlucky enough to get in a car with the wrong person. Even if an adult means well, they'd be doing a disservice to the child by undermining this.

I like it. You have to realise that the three of them are all playing characters, you don't have to agree with what they say to find it amusing. Anything "offensive" in there is tongue-in-cheek, and deliberately calculated to provoke a reaction from the habitually offended.

Ten years ago, someone crashed into the back of my car on Purley Way. Despite giving me his name and number, and having a few good natured phone calls, he soon disappeared off the radar, and the insurance company couldn't get in touch with him. A few years later, I realised that this was the man who had crashed into my car: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casey_William_Hardison

  16. Are startup costs really lower in Brixton? Seems unlikely. Residential property prices there are higher, and I assume commercial property is more expensive too, not least because of the greater footfall.
  17. Dinosaur Jr ? Get Me Built To Spill ? Carry The Zero All this classic rock stuff is all well and good, but not particularly interesting to my ears.
  18. Wanna say that to my face?
  19. Someone was accused of posting fake recommendations. In retaliation, the accused starting calling the accuser some nasty things. It didn't get any better after that... "let's meet so you can say that to my face if you dare", kind of stuff. Pretty pathetic. The BB did the right thing to stay out of it. General opinion of the restaurant was favourable, but quite expensive.

Yes you're probably right, but these socioeconomic distinctions exist pretty much everywhere. It's not the same thing as the historical British concept of social class. There is much greater social mobility these days - I'm sure a lot of us know successful people from blue collar backgrounds. The earlier poster from Sweden claims that there are no socioeconomic divides in her home town - I would say that Nordic countries with elaborate welfare states and sparse populations are the exception rather than the norm.

I think there are some decent places, but nothing blows me away. Camberwell is probably better for restaurants.
  22. Brixton is a much larger "town" than ED, not really a valid comparison. And with it's better transport, fantastic cinema, various nightclubs, and one of London's major music venues, it draws in a lot of visitors from around the capital.
  23. Surely all countries have social divides. It doesn't really matter whether you call it class or not.

  25. It stings a bit. Like pricking yourself on a small thorn. I hate blood (and sometimes throw up if I cut myself) but this really isn't all that bad.
