StraferJack
y'knowworrimeanwhen you went into that building (and adjacent buildings have/had similar layouts, but are different types of business) but you walked in and were met with some stairs immediately, you then had a few steps of "mezzanine" and then there more steps down to a huge cavernous space which may or may not have contained peopleIt wasn't a very convivial space through no fault of the owners - but it looks like FM will be flattening it all out which wil lbe a big improvement no? I tried the ED Deli ones but they were too meaty. Too much sausage and not enough roll for me. I'm intrigued by the scotch egg stall. simmonsl
This makes me happy. I went into EDD once to buy bread and once was was enough. Rudest staff ever. Ignored me in the queue for an age then eventually served me very, very begrudgingly. Very foolish given all the amazing places to get delicious food in ED. worldwiser
Wow, it was really a model of franchising. The staff were equally rude there according to reviews.. remarkable carbon copy. apod
I am sorry to see them go. I only shopped there once a week to get some delicious treats or gorgeous ham; in fact it was expensive shop, however often I was offered free second loaf of bread when I was buying one. I have never experienced any rudeness from the staff. I found them quite cheerful often singing along to some funky tunes in the shop. I will definitely miss them! Peckhamrye
They gave away bread when it was on the verge of being stale, or at least that is how they explained it to me. savvygirl
Only used EDD a couple of times and thought maybe it was me they were reluctant to serve because I wasn't posh enough! tfwsoll
I've shopped there a fair bit since they opened and found the staff to be generally helpful and friendly. It's a shame they got a reputation for being rude as you can't afford to get a bad reputation now that there is so much competition, although I do wonder that some people never use a store again after one bad experience (although I did the same with Oliver Bonas so maybe I shouldn't judge others!).Their take-away lasagne and quiches were great and I was partial to their goats cheese and beetroot salad. At one time, their cakes were excellent (if not particularly cheap). When they first opened, they sold the best ice cream in East Dulwich.I frequently had their 'two for the price of one' bread at the end of the day, which usually stayed fresh for a couple of days.As others have said, I just hope that what replaces them IS as improvement. bawdy-nan
It's funny that "never returning after one incident of rudeness". I haven,t been into William Rose for about 5years or so since a really horrible experience. Annasfield
The Greek/Turkish supermarket is superb. I buy nearly everything I can from there. Excellent value and supporting a local business. Win win. It's a shame about the deli as it's never nice to see a local business disappear. It was stupidly expensive though Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/44782-ed-deli-closing/page/2/#findComment-751430 Share on other sites
pinecone
it's true, as with so many things in life, credibility and trust is built every day over years, but can be completely lost in a minute. SteveUK1978
I'd give William Rose another go if I were you - exceptional service from my experience. On EDD - they were pretty grumpy in there though. Very shoddy queueing system too which was very open to pusher-inners. susiq
across the road from the ed deli - fruit and veg outside, is another deli, good breads, cheesecake, salami, olives, stuffed vine etc,and not half as expensive, been there for years.Lets hope ED property is not yet another estate agent or over the top up itself "wine bar/eating house/gastro gastly get over yourself drinking place" Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/44782-ed-deli-closing/page/2/#findComment-751436 Share on other sites
Ani
I thought Jay the Manager was brilliant. He knew his stuff, and was very helpful and had a great sense of humour . I also think Tony the owner is a great chap. I was there when it first opened and think it's a huge shame that it's closed. I wish Jay and Tony all the best for the future.
